Text Box: Fashion and interior design, not very far apart

If you are ever wondering what will be the latest trends in interior decorating next year, just go to Fashion Week. Interior and fashion design are extremely closely related, working off of the same principals – color, texture, pattern, and silhouette. You’ll find that people who wear more modern clothing have a more modern home. The same applies to people with traditional tastes in clothing.
Color applies to every aspect of design and should be in balance. You should accessorize with colors that make you feel good in your home, and flatter you in fashion. Why not use the same color for both? I find that many people who are drawn to one color use it everywhere, from their wardrobe, home decorating, even their car! If you are unsure what colors you should use in your home, look through your closet. You’re favorite piece of clothing usually is a good starting point.
Trends in color this year are directly linked to the colors that dominated fashion run-ways last year, including teal, brown, navy blue, pink and metallics. Royal colors mixed with metallic accessories are part of what we call the “Glamour” movement in design which gets its roots from the fashion of “Old Hollywood”. Another big motif in glamour design is bold black and white contrasts, like the old movies. This spring, and still continuing on today metallic gold, silver, bronze, and champagne are huge in fashion and they are translating themselves into interiors in artwork, accessories, even wall treatments.
Mixing a variety of texture creates interest and excitement. A few years ago, embroidery was everything in fashion. It has since translated itself into interior design with embroidered silk, and crewel embroidered linen. Fashion has moved into lace and sequins. In the future, I don’t think the typical white lace will cut it in interiors. Instead I see mixing the texture of lace with the new exciting colors of the time. Some of the popular fabrics in fashion are leather and velvet. Interiors have already had the leather, a classic, for a few years, but we are expecting the velvet to hit the scene again soon.
Patterns this year have exploded! We’ve gone from little and dainty to bold, big and beautiful. This has had a huge effect on wallpaper and fabric. Incorporating new exciting colors, unique textures and oversized patterns wallpaper is the most fashion foreword statement for you home this fall and spring.
Silhouette has to do in fashion with the outlined shape of a garment. In interior design it has to do with the overall look of a room. It has a lot to do with balance. A more modern design isn’t symmetrical, while a more traditional look is in perfect balance. I see things leaning more and more towards the asymmetric designs, but classic design will always be a more balanced look.
Another trend in fashion design to consider for home interiors this fall and spring is bold accessorizing. In fashion, you see people wearing the big, bold jewelry, translated that into your home. An oversized vase, or over embellished mirror will make a bold statement in your foyer. Pay attention to the details in any design and remember to go with what inspires you.
